How do I get longer screen and hammer life?

Keep foreign material (nuts, bolts, rocks, etc.) out of your product
Have the proper number of hammers in your mill - too many hammers or not enough hammers cause some of the problems.
Maintain the proper hammer to screen clearance for your particular product.
Use screens with the holes staggered in the grinding direction.
Use an air assisted system on your mill.
Install magnets to remove metal.

Why doesn't my hammermill run smoother and vibrate less?

Several things can cause a hammermill to vibrate, some of these are:
Hammers not balanced properly
Hammer rod grooving
Hammer hole elongation
Uneven wear on the hammers
Hammer pattern improperly installed
Hole elongation in rotor hammer rod holes
Wear on the rotor plates or shaft (especially rotor end plates)
Motor coupling not properly aligned
Improperly feeding the hammermill and causing surging

How do I know when to change screens, hammers and/or rods?

Loss of capacity
Increased energy consumption - watch the % loaded meter or the ampere meter very closely
A change in your ground product
Maintenance records indicating past changes in tons, hours, days, weeks, or months
Dull screens and worn out hammers are very inefficient and are detrimental to both your capacity and quality

Are all hammermills basically the same?

No, hammermills vary greatly.  No one hammermill is designed to do all types of grinding.  Some factors to consider when choosing a hammermill are: product, fineness, particle size distribution, air relief systems, service from the OEM, experience of the OEM with your product, available space and budget.
Try to talk with other people in the industry who have experience grinding your product and find out what has worked or not worked for them.
